東南アジア世界の近世 / Early Modern Southeast Asia
【授業の目標、概要／Course Objectives/ Overview】
現代において基本的には、東南アジアは、国民国家に分かれ、それぞれが中央集権的で、官僚主義的な国家と、そのような国家を支える理念へと収れんしていきます。往々にして、そのような国家理念は、主にはナショナリズムですが、21世紀の現在の視点からみると、より流動的で、この地域に特徴的な移動性や重層性の場合もあります。つまり、「想像の共同体」が確固たるものでなくても、国家を形成しているという状況であり、そこには単一で共通の国語や国民文学といったものが十分な強さを持っていない場合が大半です。他方、東南アジア各国には、それぞれの特徴があり、必ずしも画一化されていっているわけではありません。本授業では、近代の近視眼に距離を置きこの地域を理解するまでに、西洋に植民地化される前の近世から学びます。
In the second half of the 20th century, former colonial Southeast Asia is generally divided into nation-states, each characterized by centralization and bureaucratic governance, aligning with an unique ideologies that supports each of these nations. These national ideologies are primarily rooted in nationalism. However, when viewed from the perspective of the 21st century, there is greater fluidity and a tendency towards mobility and complexity unique to this region. In other words, nationalism as “imagined political community” might not be firmly established, and in many cases, nationalisms of this region lack such elements as a common national language or national literature. On the other hand, each Southeast Asian country possesses its own distinct features and is not necessarily moving towards the sole standard. In this course, we will distance ourselves from a modernist narrow view and learn about this region by looking into the early modern period before Western colonization took place.

東南アジアの通史と世界史
National Histories and Global History in Southeast Asia
【授業の目標、概要／Course Objectives/ Overview】
東南アジア研究の一つの難しさは、現地の人々を歴史的な人間として捉えることだと思っています。つまり、ローカル、地方的（民族的）、ナショナル、東南アジア全域、グローバルと重層的な歴史の中で、この地域の様々な国家の国民であり、特定の言語集団や民族に属する人々を異なる歴史の交差点から捉えるということが難しいという点があります。というのも、各国の国民構成は、極めて複雑ですが、アイデンティティもとても多様で、そのアイデンティティを表すナショナル・ヒストリーやローカル・ヒストリーも低調だからです。そこで今回の授業では、東南アジアのナショナル・ヒストリーを読み、その上で、特にアンソニー・リードが記してきた、グローバル・ヒストリーを読みたいと思います。
One of the difficulties of SEA studies is to conceive of the people in this region as agents embedded in historical interstices. We will examine the diverse layers of history from local to provincial (ethnic), national, regional, and global levels, In this region, individuals identify themselves as belonging to certain nations and to diverse linguistic or ethnic groups, but the production of history writing at each level has been insufficient. To address this issue, we will read the national histories and the global histories authored by Anthony Reid.
