Women’s History and Gender History in Southeast Asia

Course Objectives/ Overview

This semester, we will focus on women’s history and gender history. Our goal is to highlight women in historical studies—especially political history—where men are often the central figures. At the same time, gender history aims to challenge this traditional binary boundary of male and female as we explore the past. While we will occasionally reference Japanese literature, our primary focus this semester will be on chapters from English language monographs. I believe that reading from monographs is crucial because, particularly in the relatively new field of Southeast Asian history, monographs can present significant themes that are difficult to capture in journal articles and journal articles vary in qualities. Although some gender history research from American studies will be included, we will strive to keep our discussions centered on Southeast Asia.

Constitutional Rule in Southeast Asia

Course Objectives/ Overview
In this semester’s class, we will be examining the constitutional systems of various Southeast Asian countries. Rather than from a legal perspective, we will analyze them from a historical viewpoint, considering how the multiple ethnicities were managed and multi-layered legal systems are practiced in Southeast Asian countries. We will read articles from two edited volumes in English. One is about the rule of law in East Asia and Southeast Asia, and the other about the origin of constitutional systems. While an interest in Southeast Asia is necessary, students interested in law and history are also welcome.
