東南アジア研究におけるエスノグラフィーとグローバル・ヒストリーII
Ethnography and Global History in Southeast Asian Studies II

前学期と同様に、輪読と発表を中心にゼミ形式の授業を行います。発表は参加者ご自身の研究発表です。東南アジア研究の難しさの一つに、方法論があります。現地社会からの発信よりも、その多様な重層的な社会は、他地域の人々によるフィールド・ワークで探求されてきました。現地の資料の蓄積やアクセスの問題も大きく、他者による記録や域外に蓄積された資料を基に、この地域の歴史が描かれてきました。対象地域からの発信に学び、考察するという一般的な地域研究の方法が適用しずらい地域と言えます。他方では、政治資料の貧弱さと対照的なその多様性や文化的な事象の興味深さが、この地域についての研究を支えてきたと言えます。そこで、今学期には、エスノグラフィーとグローバル・ヒストリーを含めた歴史叙述という二つの視点から、東南アジア研究に迫ってみたいと思います。なお、基本的には単著者による単著本を扱いますが、前学期と異なり、日本語文献も対象とします。

As in the previous semester, the class will be conducted in a seminar format, focusing on reading book-length studies and presentations of participants’ own research. One of the challenges in Southeast Asian studies lies in methodology. Rather than being articulated from within local societies, the region’s diverse and multilayered social formations have primarily been explored through fieldwork conducted by researchers from outside the region. The limited accumulation and accessibility of local sources have also been a major issue; consequently, much of the history of this region has been constructed on the basis of records produced by outsiders and materials preserved beyond the region itself. In this sense, it can be said that Southeast Asia is a region where the common approach in area studies——learning from and reflecting on perspectives generated within the region——is difficult to apply. At the same time, the region’s social diversity and remarkable cultural phenomena, particularly when contrasted with the scarcity of political documentation, have sustained scholarly interest in Southeast Asian studies. Against this backdrop, in this semester, we will approach Southeast Asian studies from two perspectives: ethnography and historical writing, especially within global history. While the course will primarily focus on monographs by single authors, unlike the previous semester, we will also include works written in Japanese.

東南アジア研究におけるエスノグラフィーとグローバル・ヒストリー
Ethnography and Global History in Southeast Asian Studies

授業の目標、概要／Course Objectives/ Overview
東南アジア研究の難しさの一つに、現地社会の学術的な発信力の弱さがあります。つまり、社会科学や人文学の業績が、現地社会で次々に発表され、それを他地域の人々が学ぶという状況にはなっていません。むしろ、他地域の人々がこの地域に行き、フィールド・ワークを行っています。他方では、現地のアーカイブスが充実しているわけでもないので、他者による記録や域外に蓄積された資料を基に、この地域の歴史が描かれてきました。グローバル・ヒストリーへの相性が良いと言える反面、現地社会についての詳細な歴史が書かれてきたわけでもありません。そこで、今学期には、エスノグラフィーとグローバル・ヒストリーという二つの視点から、東南アジア研究に迫ってみたいと思います。

One of the challenges in studying Southeast Asia is its weak academic output from local societies. In other words, the social sciences and humanities are not being actively published and disseminated within these societies in a way that allows people from other regions to learn from them. Instead, researchers from other regions travel to Southeast Asia to conduct fieldwork. At the same time, local archives are not particularly well-developed, so the history of the region has been constructed based on records made by outsiders and materials accumulated outside the region. While this makes Southeast Asia well-suited for global history approaches, it also means that detailed histories of local societies have not been extensively written. In this semester, I would like to explore Southeast Asian studies from the perspectives of both ethnography and global history.
